DORSET FORECAST - JANUARY

SHORE: Charmouth and Seatown just east of Lyme Regis for late bass and conger. Chesil beach at the Bridging Camp for good whiting sport with pout and codling. Abbotsbury, West Bexington and Cogden for whiting, pout, dab and cod with dogfish. West Bay Pier for dab and whiting. The biggest wrasse are likely to fall to velvet crab at Pulpit Rock on Portland. Good chance of a big bass from the cranes area. Pout and dogfish at Church Ope Cove. The Tout at Warbarrow south of Wareham for conger and bull huss with some late wrasse. The Fleet and Weymouth harbour for flounder. Weymouth Stone Pier for small pollack and coalfish. Dursleton Bay for bass, the odd pollack and conger on the point, plus wrasse to mid Jan. Seacombe and Winspit for big wrasse. Flounder sport should be excellent in Poole harbour especially at Jerry's and Gravel Point with ragworm the top bait and fish topping 3lb. Mudeford Spit in Christchurch Bay is sheltered from south-westerly gales and yields flounder and some nice cod on worm and crab but it's a fair walk. Double Dyke for cod and whiting on flood tides. Highcliffe and Friars for flounder and rockling at night.

BOAT: Weymouth boats for whiting and the odd cod off the Abbotsbury buoy, and whiting from the Lulworth banks. Some of the best specimen cod fall to Weymouth boats particularly if they are able to venture to Portland and West Bay. The Shambles east of Portland for whiting, dogfish and the odd pollack. The Adamant Bank is more sheltered and excellent for whiting. Mackerel strip catches well. Blonde ray still available off Portland. Marks off Swanage for big cod and off Durlston Head just to the south for conger eel. Boats from Poole for double-figure cod from the Dolphin bank just off the Needles plus whiting and dogfish with spurdog and ling from deep offshore marks, with pollack from mid-channel wrecks. These boats have also enjoyed some excellent blonde ray sport in recent years. If colder weather persists then the winter should produce some excellent fish including double-figure cod. Calamari squid and ragworm are the main baits.
