Royalty Fishery Game Report - 24th April 2010
After all the excitement of a salmon in the first week of the season had died away, once again sport slowed to a virtual standstill with very few fish appearing to enter the system. Those that did were pretty safe from anglers as the river remained high and coloured, hardly conditions conducive to successful fly fishing. Indeed I have had absolutely nothing whatsoever to report other than a number of out of season double figure barbel all of which took a fancy to tube flies fished close to the riverbed.
Conditions finally started to improve a couple of weeks ago when the water finally started to clear and it became possible to fish the fly with at least a degree of confidence. Indeed it was nearly necessary to write a report last Wednesday when two fish were hooked - one below the Falls and the other below Hayters - but neither fish stayed on the hook for very long!
This week there is finally something to smile about with three fish being landed in the last two days. On Thursday Fred Witlock landed the first fish since February a 15lb hen which took a Comet tube in Edwards. The next day Blyth Oxley used a Black Pot Bellied Pig at the top of Edwards and successfully tempted a 12lb hen and in the evening guest rod Vic Abbott had a 13lb hen from the same area.
Several other fish have been seen so there are finally a few fish entering the river and hopefully anglers will see a bit more sport now.
Finally I am pleased to report the first sea trout was landed from below the Falls by Andy Johnson. This fish weighed around 2lb 8oz but I forgot to ask Andy what the successful fly was!
