Winkton Fishery Catch Reports

Winkton Fishery News – 10th March 2008

Sport over the last week has been as good as it has been all season with a good number of chub being caught to almost seven pounds along with reasonable bags of roach and dace. Garry Teer landed a lovely thick bodied chub in excellent condition weighing 5lb 4oz chub from the main river on 9th March 2008 whilst his fishing partner Bob Simpson took a personal best chub of 6lb 12oz from the Sopley Mark end of fishery on luncheon meat. Regular Winkton angler Andy Johnson also had chub of 5lbs and 6lb 12oz  along with a bonus 9lb 14 mirror carp which couldn't resist his ledgered maggot bait. All in all the season is finishing well on this lovely fishery

Winkton Fishery News – CAC and Day Ticket Water  -     4th JANUARY 2008

This last few weeks has seen an up-turn in sport with several chub over 5lb and a couple over 6lb in weight. Some good bags of silvers have come out and a report of the carp showing has been made.

Some Pike are being taken but we would remind you all not to spin or fly fish at any time. Dead sea baits are acceptable but no coarse fish, live or dead, may be brought onto fishery. All live baits must be caught on the fishery on the day of use only.

The worm should sort out the better Chub, however it should be noted that the use of lobworms is generally banned in the Avon valley because of the salmon.

The area up the left hand channel should be targeted for the chub and barbel and also the area above the flood weir up to the top boundary.

The use of meat, pellet and paste will also bring the Chub but Barbel will be few and far between after the recent frosts, however don’t rule them out totally. Corn over a bed of hemp may be the way to go. However it should be noted that the fish on the lower beats are coming out on float fished maggot but be prepared to use at least 3-4 pints for feeding and to see off the minnows which still abound.

The roach and dace should come to the maggot or caster but if specimen roach are the target then bread in all its various form is a good bet from now on as a little colour appears.

Finally the CAC, estate and the bailiffs thank those who have sent in catch returns and hope that you continue to report your catch to me or to

Davis Tackle after fishing, either by calling in or by email to help us monitor what is going on.

As January is upon us we would wish all of our regulars and visitors alike tight lines in the New Year.

Winkton Fishery News – 30th. October 2007

I must apologise for the long delay in putting out another report but anglers using the water have not been putting in returns as requested. However by snooping, listening to conversations and adding my own catches to the list the following fish have been taken.

Carp up 26lb 4ozs, Pike to 18lb, several Chub over 5lb and up to 6lb 5ozs, Barbel to 11lb 12ozs, Roach up to 1lb 12ozs and some very good bags of ‘herring’ dace, plus a lot of small Barbel in the 8 to 12oz range, these latter are very good to see but PLEASE do not put them in keepnets.

The area up the left hand channel has been best for the Chub and Barbel and also the area above the flood weir up to the top boundary. The Carp have come out from around the top weir generally.

The use of meat, pellet and paste should bring Barbel and Chub, however don’t rule out corn over a bed of hemp either although it is now a bit late in the year for these tactics. Try cheese paste in various mixes for the Chub.

The Roach and Dace should come to the maggot or caster but if specimen roach are the target then bread in all it’s various form is a good bet.

Try the roving approach now that winter is on us, using large pieces of flake or crust for the Chub and Roach, although smaller size baits will probably be better for the Roach.

Finally the estate and the bailiffs would still request that you report your catch to Davis Tackle after fishing, either by calling in or email or telephone to help us monitor what is going on.

Tight lines to all and I hope to report again soon.

Winkton Fishery News – 10th AUGUST 2007

This last couple of weeks has seen an up-turn in sport with barbel to 11lb, several chub over 5lb and a couple over 6lb in weight. Some good bags of silvers have come out and a report of the carp showing has been made.

A rather unusual showing of perch up to 2lb and some up to around 3lb have been seen. The worm should sort out those or a live minnow, however it should be noted that the use of lobworms is generally banned in the Avon valley because of the salmon.

The area up the left hand channel should be targeted for the chub and barbel and also the area above the flood weir up to the top boundary.

The use of meat, pellet and paste should bring barbel and chub, however don’t rule out corn over a bed of hemp either.

The roach and dace should come to the maggot or caster but if specimen roach are the target then bread in all it’s various form is a good bet.

Finally the estate and the bailiffs would still request that you report your catch to Davis Tackle after fishing, either by calling in or email or telephone to help us monitor what is going on.

Winkton Fishery News – 29th JULY 2007

After another month of unsettled weather it is hard to find anything good to report. Personally it has been difficult but chub, barbel and silvers have all come to the net. The conditions have been at times treacherous under foot and needed some care in getting about, several times I found myself sitting on the ground having slipped in the large amounts of mud.

The forecast for the beginning of August appears to be for dry and sunny weather which hopefully allow the river conditions to fine down and for the weed coming down to stop, allowing for easier fishing conditions.

The use of meat, pellet and paste should bring barbel and chub, however don’t rule out corn over a bed of hemp either.

The roach and dace should come to the maggot or caster but if specimen roach are the target then bread in all it’s various form is a good bet.

Finally the estate and the bailiffs would request that you report your catch to Davis Tackle after fishing, either by calling in or email or telephone to help us monitor what is going on.

Winkton Fishery News – 23rd JUNE 2007

After the end of the first week of the season it is good to report that Winkton is fishing well. A slowish start with chub up to 6lb 13ozs on opening day, along with a handful of barbel up to the 6 – 7lb mark and a few silvers to make up the bags.

As the week has gone on the fishing has been varied with the state of the water varying due to the amount of rain, however several people have been out, mainly in the evenings and most have been catching.

Up to today barbel to 9lb and several more good chub and a few bream have been caught, and those float fishing have been bagging up all week.

There is however one blot on the landscape; up to last night more than 3 bags of rubbish had been cleared up – NOT ACCEPTABLE – if you can bring it with you then you can just as easily take it away again. This will not be tolerated and anybody found with rubbish of any description in their swim will have their book/ticket lifted and they will be asked to leave the fishery.

The one other point to be made is NO day ticket anglers are allowed to fish the main weir, apart from the one swim under the oak tree immediately over the weir.

With the unsettled weather set to continue we can only hope that the fishing will be o.k.

In the next couple of weeks it is hoped to give some guideline as to how to fish the water and were the best spots are, this for the benefit mainly of the visiting day ticket anglers.

Winkton Fishery News – 29th May 2007

At last the start of the new season is almost upon us and I’m sure I am not alone in the anticipation that it brings.

During the closed season a lot of work has been done and it is now possible to walk up through the woods without jungle clearing gear.

The bridge downstream of the weir has been reinstated and it is hoped that a path will have been cut beyond it before the 16th June.

The side stream has for sometime been so overgrown and blocked by the fallen trees and their branches and rootings as to be unfishable. It has taken a lot of work to get all of this out of the water and I must thank Ian May and his committee team for the extra help they have given to me.

The fishery is still very under fished and I hope that in the coming season this will change, and, if you do give it a go, please report you catches or otherwise so that the information can be used for future planning.
