Winkton Fishery Archive 2006-2007 Season

Winkton Fishery News – 18th January 2007

The unkind weather has been against us but the few anglers out on the water don’t seem to mind. A few catches of mainly silver fish have been taken and also some pike, although none of any great size.

There has been however one chub reported of 7lbs 7ozs taken by Andy Johnson last Saturday from the main river.

Away from the actual fishing it can be told that over 20 bird boxes and 2 owl houses have now been put up in a joint effort between the estate keeper and some CAC regulars. It is hoped that more conservation work will be carried out in the near future.

In making this report the main problem is still with people not making any returns, either to me, the keeper or to Davis Tackle. Please help in making accurate reports, this will be greatly appreciated and help with future planning.

Please note that the Hampshire Avon at Winkton is a foot over the banks this morning so, for safety reasons, the Pike Match has been cancelled. Further details will be posted on here when they become available.

Winkton Fishery News – 26th December 2006

It has been a rather lean couple of weeks but those who have been out have managed to catch the silvers, gudgeon and some roach.

The main bait has again been the maggot over hemp or brown crumb, with the roach again falling mainly to bread, with a little and often approach using mashed bread feed.

Some pike have come out but they have been mainly on the small side, the best being only just about 10lbs.

A few chub have been taken up to 3lbs, mainly on worm, this due to high and coloured water for much of the time.

The main problem has been with people not making any returns, either to me, the keeper or to Davis Tackle. Your help in maintaining accurate reports will be greatly appreciated and help us with future planning.

Finally I should like to remind everyone that a charity pike match is being held on this water on 31st December, New Year’s Eve.

Winkton Fishery News – 4th December 2006

This is the first of what I hope will become a fortnightly report on this fishery.

This season has seen a healthy increase in the numbers of local and day ticket visits and the catches have been reasonable with barbel to 11lbs 4oz., a good number of chub to well over 6lbs and carp up to 18lbs. being taken. Several large bags of roach and dace, up to 30lbs, have been put together, with the roach going up to about 1lb.

Some bags have seen chub, small barbel and gudgeon mixed in with the dace and roach.

However since the weather has turned and the water has been going up and down like the proverbial fiddler’s elbow, carrying a fair bit of colour and rubbish, it has been more difficult to predict. Several good bags of silver fish have come to mainly caster over hemp, but the roach have mainly been taken on bread in its various forms.

Pike have now begun to feature and have been taken on both live and dead baits, with the dead baits accounting for the better fish, so far up to 17lbs. It must be remembered that only sea dead baits maybe brought onto the fishery and any live bait has to be caught on the day from the fishery; no spinning, fly fishing or sink and draw is allowed.

The outlook is reasonably good for the next couple of weeks, as long as the levels don’t fluctuate too much and the colour stays reasonable.

Best chance are the roach and dace, mainly on the light leger down the side; and of course pike on the dead bait.
